Small Talk at Kripalu

Pubished Originally November 7, 2019

Shortly before closing time I step through the large wooden doors of the Kripalu Store. It is quiet and smells of lavender and rose water. I find myself in front of a display of Tarot cards. I see the image of a naked man hanging by a noose.

“Is your room hot?” a woman asks. She has very large breasts.

“Like an oven,” I respond.

She says, “I tried to get another fan but no luck. I have a friend who lives in North Carolina and its hot there ten months a year. I found out recently that I am a medium. I saw my dead uncle over my left shoulder. I don’t know if I want to be a medium.”

“Hmmmmm, that’s interesting,” I say, “seems like it would be a lot of responsibility.”

She says, “No, not really.”

I reach for the Tarot deck displaying man on noose. Its perfect!

“Have a nice evening,” I say.
