Is Pluto even a planet anymore?” I ask.
My husband says, “No, its not. It used to be the one farthest from the Sun. Now there are eight planets with Neptune being the farthest. Pluto is called a dwarf planet now but there is talk about it being given planetary status again.”
“I feel like Pluto.” I say. “Remy is the Sun.”
I google “planets” and learn about Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars, the Terrestrials. Their characteristics vary but they all have rocky mass. Neptune, Uranus and Saturn, the Jovians, are gaseous. Don’t get me started. I wrack my mind trying to decide which of the extended family best represents each planet revolving around Remy. It’s impossible to do without stepping on some massive toes. Suffice to say, the families circle around her, jockeying themselves into her energetic field.
My husband reminds me, “Pluto is great. Pluto is complex. It’s not just full of hot air. It may be classified as a dwarf planet but it continues its slow, isolated revolutions around the Sun, watching from a distance, knowing it is awesome.”
Remy says, “Gammy, I love you most of all.”
Pluto is satisfied. The Sun and Pluto have a special relationship that distance can neither alter nor deny. Pluto may not have regained planetary status yet but Pluto is indeed awesome.
